an interesting example of fluid contact and release, with over 19,000 views and some interesting comments. I include some here:

an interesting example of fluid contact and release, with interesting comments:
"Like Aikido, tango has a lot of circular motions but no knockout like martial arts. It is a tool of seduction. Since tango consists of natural circular motions, you can find 70-years-old professionals like Aikido does. As you get older, you could continue to improve your skills. Ballroom dancing has retirement, because it is a competition defined by British to pursue their own ideal styles".

"I forgot to mention Tango is Argentine Tango, not ballroom tango which is not natural. Argentine Tango is probably the most difficult dancing and it can be improvisable, but choreographed ballroom dancing on TV can not". sf07creative

"The only thing "tango" in this film is the music. What I see is Aikido. It doesn't have to be fast. Nage has the responsibility of matching uke's speed, which he is doing here. The fluidity they both display is outstanding. My sensei had us do this kind of practice of flowing freeform through a series of techniques, without losing contact and without the music." BisonBooger

"don't make me laugh... or cry. O Sensei developed his Way, and his Way is a Way of the Warrior, a BUDO, and even if Aikido could seem like a dance, it's NOT!! It's a fucking self defense martial art with great spiritual concepts. I can say that again...that's NOT what AIkido is meant to be" xlins

"Solo una interpretacion de las infinitas posibilidades que este arte tiene". WvvWvvLEOvvWvvW

Une pratique du Tango a éviter dans les milongas, cela risque de refroidir quelques partenaires ...

uhm, i replied to Pierre but it disappeared... i wrote that the tango nuevo style seems to make more victims (and unhappy dancers) than this 'pratique'...In aikido it seems the space is respected, and the opponent/s too. The connection goes beyond the partner, and it is / shown as effortless.
what i like in this video is the constant 3 dimensional, spheric fluid connection.

Saludos.

I think that when abstracting/moving away from something you end up closer to the original...because you need to know what you are moving away from! and you need to decide what to keep and what to add...
As aikido is a 'defence' practise, one usually attacks and the other diverts the attack. As aikido is practise largely by contact improvisation dancers, it is possible to see a more balanced movement dialogue based on its principles. your question about cutting those 'stereotyped' roles is the main aim in my research and study. by observing the local society, one understands local dances.... ; )
